November is American Diabetes Month- so it’s a great time to remind our patients of the importance of your annual bloodwork. Your annual bloodwork will measure your fasting glucose levels. A high level of fasting blood sugar shows that your body is not metabolizing blood sugar (glucose) properly. Looking at fasting insulin level and hemoglobin A1C can help detect prediabetes.

Per the American Diabetes Association, “Diabetes is one of the leading caused of disability and death in the United States. It can cause blindness, nerve damage, kidney disease, and other health problems if it’s not controlled” Diabetes and prediabetes are so prevalent in the US that 49 to 52% of the population has been diagnosed with one of the other and most don’t even know it. Even those with a healthy weight can fall victim to this disease. Symptoms of diabetes include urinary frequency, increased thirst, and increased hunger.

Inactivity, being overweight, poor eating habits, polycystic ovary syndrome, and those with a history of gestational diabetes, as well as family history of diabetes all increase your risk of developing the disease. We can be proactive and help you address and minimize your risk with a treatment plan designed for you.

Should your bloodwork indicate prediabetes, our fist recommendations would be to 1. Avoid processed foods 2. lower daily carbohydrate intake. 3. minimized alcohol intake. 4. increase exercise. We would also recommend a couple of our high-quality supplements from our Nutraceutical line: An Omega 3 supplement as well as our Berberine supplement that helps combat insulin resistance.
