How do Weight Loss Injections Work?
In June 2021, the FDA approved Wegovy (2.4 mg once weekly) for chronic weight management in patients with a BMI of 27 kg/m2 or greater who have at least one weight-related medical problem or in patients with a BMI of 30 kg/m2 or greater. Weight-related medical issues which can be worsened by obesity include the following:
- Type 2 diabetes
- High cholesterol
- High blood pressure
- Sleep apnea
- Arthritis
- Joint problems
- Back pain
- Urinary incontinence
While Mounjaro is still being investigated for FDA approval specifically for weight loss, it is frequently prescribed off-label for this purpose. Ozempic is also often prescribed off-label for weight loss. Studies show that Wegovy patients lost an average of 15% of their body weight over 5 ½ years, with some losing as much as 20%. Meanwhile, patients on Mounjaro experienced a 15-20% weight reduction within one year, translating to around 30-35 pounds lost.
About one-third of these patients lost 46 lbs or more. However, roughly 14% of Wegovy patients did not lose more than 5% of their weight, making them "non-responders" to the medication. In a separate study involving Mounjaro participants, those taking 15 mg of the medication experienced an average weight reduction of 15.7%, which translates to roughly 34 pounds lost. For those taking 10 mg, the weight reduction was up to 13.4% or almost 30 pounds over six years.
