Shed Pounds and Gain Confidence

The FDA has approved Ozempic, Wegovy, and Semaglutide as medications for weight loss. Additionally, Mounjaro (tirzepatide) has demonstrated significant results for weight loss, though it is currently only FDA-approved for managing type 2 diabetes. These medications reduce appetite and increase fat-burning efficiency. Dr. Lisa Jukes, a women's health expert and founder of Modern Women's Health, has successfully incorporated these medications into her practice, supporting patients who have tried diet and exercise without achieving their desired results.

What are Weight Loss Injections?

With over 70% of U.S. adults classified as overweight or obese, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), weight loss solutions are more crucial than ever. While diet and exercise remain foundational, they may not work for everyone. GLP-1 receptor agonists are one class of medication aiding in weight loss, initially approved to treat type 2 diabetes. These drugs mimic GLP-1, a hormone that helps regulate blood sugar and appetite, which in turn assists with weight management.

GLP-1 receptor agonists act by increasing insulin secretion, decreasing glucagon, and slowing gastric emptying. Popular options include Wegovy and Ozempic, both longer-acting versions of older GLP-1 medications like Victoza, Saxenda, and Trulicity. Mounjaro also has a unique advantage as it targets both GLP-1 and GIP receptors.

How do Weight Loss Injections Work?

In June 2021, the FDA approved Wegovy (2.4 mg once weekly) for chronic weight management in patients with a BMI of 27 kg/m2 or greater who have at least one weight-related medical problem or in patients with a BMI of 30 kg/m2 or greater. Weight-related medical issues which can be worsened by obesity include the following:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Sleep apnea
  • Arthritis
  • Joint problems
  • Back pain
  • Urinary incontinence

While Mounjaro is still being investigated for FDA approval specifically for weight loss, it is frequently prescribed off-label for this purpose. Ozempic is also often prescribed off-label for weight loss. Studies show that Wegovy patients lost an average of 15% of their body weight over 5 ½ years, with some losing as much as 20%. Meanwhile, patients on Mounjaro experienced a 15-20% weight reduction within one year, translating to around 30-35 pounds lost.

About one-third of these patients lost 46 lbs or more. However, roughly 14% of Wegovy patients did not lose more than 5% of their weight, making them "non-responders" to the medication. In a separate study involving Mounjaro participants, those taking 15 mg of the medication experienced an average weight reduction of 15.7%, which translates to roughly 34 pounds lost. For those taking 10 mg, the weight reduction was up to 13.4% or almost 30 pounds over six years.
